Late last night, a 5.9 earthquake hit North West Haiti, causing reported damage in the areas of Port-de-Paix, Gros-Mornes and Plaisance, including damage to a hospital. There are currently differing reports on the number of lives that have sadly been lost, but this mornings Guardian has reported 11 known deaths and more than 100 injured.
We received news from one of our Haitian team in Cap-Haitian last night who shared, 'We have felt the Earthquake so strong in Cap-Haïtien but so far I haven't heard any damage in Cap. But there's some damage in other areas of Haiti.' We are grateful that whilst our area felt the tremors, there is no immediate report that the hospital or surrounding area has been damaged.
We will be monitoring the situation carefully through out the day and will provide a further update in due course. Whilst we are relieved Cap-Haitian seems to be OK, we know individuals and partners working in the areas that have been impacted, and would ask that you join us in praying for them today.
